Protecting Curly and Natural Hair in Winter

Winter weather is really harsh on natural hair.  Natural curls, coils, kinks, twists and braids are already prone to dryness, so keep your hair extra hydrated and moisturized - especially those ends - this winter.  Here are a few extra tips:

1.  To reduce frizz after washing your hair in the shower, use a rich, leave-in conditioner and put on your plastic shower cap.  Keep the shower cap on an extra 10 minutes after your shower. Your softer hair will thank you.

2.  Wear a bonnet under winter knit hats and caps to protect natural hair from frizzy hair and friction.  Apply a small amount of oil, like our Hibiscus Edge Oil to your edges. Remember to tuck the sides and back of your bonnet under your hat.

3.  Instead of coated elastic bands, use a small, round banana clip or satin/silk  scrunchies to gather natural hair.  Add a little extra oil and braiding butter to the ends of twists or braids before tucking them under.  This will help clips and scrunchies slide off your hair without snagging your natural curls.

4.  Keep a satin or silk scarf draped around the collar of your coat to keep your ends from becoming brittle and breaking off. Better yet, pin your natural hair up, off your collar.

5.  If you have two-strand twists or braids, lightly mist them with aloe vera juice, warm water or something similar, then apply a small amount of shea butter - or our braiding butter - to your ends. Natural curls are fragile, especially in winter.

And finally, hydrate from within.  Drink plenty of water.  Your insides will thank you.
